The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is warning patients and doctors to use a “relatively new and safe” drug instead of Viagra to treat erectile dysfunction.
The new warning was based on a “risk-reduction” analysis of data from a large Canadian study, which showed that men with erectile dysfunction were twice as likely to experience a recurrence of the condition as men without erectile dysfunction.
The researchers compared the risk of recurrence with Viagra in patients who took the new drug and had no prior recurrence of erectile dysfunction, compared with a placebo group, according to the study.
The risk of recurrence was significantly higher in the group treated with Viagra (18.5% recurrence) than the group treated with placebo (7.4%, P<.001).
This is the first time the FDA has warned against using a drug to treat erectile dysfunction.
